630 Miles Braver – Midlifing on the South West Coast Path (2025)
At forty, Zoe stands at the threshold of England’s South West Coast Path, carrying not just a heavy backpack but the weight of lifelong self-doubt. What begins as a birthday challenge to walk 630 miles transforms into an extraordinary journey of self-discovery, healing, and unexpected connections.
As she navigates between rugged cliffs and peaceful coves, Zoe confronts her deepest fears—from wading treacherous estuaries to wild camping alone. The trail tests her limits, but it’s through these challenges that she discovers a strength she never knew she possessed. Along the way, she finds an impromptu trail family, encounters acts of astonishing kindness from strangers, and learns that adventure knows no age.
When personal tragedy strikes early in her journey, the path becomes more than just a physical challenge—it becomes a place of healing and transformation. Through rain, wind, blisters and triumphs, Zoe emerges with a profound truth: we are all capable of far more than we believe.
630 Miles Braver is a warm, honest memoir that will inspire anyone who has ever doubted their own capabilities. It’s not just a story about walking—it’s about finding the courage to take that first step toward becoming who you truly are.

630 Miles Braver

Midlifing on the South West Coast Path
“What happens when a woman decides to walk 630 miles into her forties?”
At forty, Zoe stood at the start of England’s longest National Trail, carrying the weight of self-doubt along with her oversized rucksack full of unnecessary gadgets and gear. What followed was 48 days of living life in full colour – facing fears, finding friendship, dealing with loss, wild camping (eventually!), and discovering that adventure has no age limit. This isn’t just about walking a coastal path – it’s about embracing midlife one step at a time.

“I intended to keep it for my holiday in a couple of weeks, but I thought I’d just read a chapter, but can’t put it down. Love it.”
“I finished your book – loved it. What a journey! And I would imagine that writing the book was another big adventure in itself. Great work – thank you for sharing, I feel privileged to have been able to read an early copy.”
“I am deeply lost right now, in emotional turmoil with myself. And I seek safety, inspiration and comfort in your words.”
“One journey with many lessons as we follow Zoe’s physical and mental ups and downs around the beautiful southwest coast path.
It became so reassuring as Zoe verbalised the nags and fears that regularly ran through my head, blocking my every thought of adventure. Then, one by one, she bashed those thoughts away with reason and/or experience gained during her trip.
The path taught her many lessons, and she willingly shares each with us as her journey unfolds. Her reoccurring battle with self-doubt echoes so many women’s views of adventure and solo travel. But Zoe’s ability to verbalize these thoughts and her methods to overcome them elevate this from an average story of someone’s travels to a rally call to the healing process of personal physical challenge.
Though this adventure is finished, I do so hope there will be sequels, but while I wait for the next episode, it must be time for me to get on and plan an adventure.”About the Author
Zoe Langley-Wathen discovered her love of long-distance walking at forty, when she stepped onto the South West Coast Path for her first major adventure.
